LAPP related Library Visit Information

Please notify the coordinator if you plan on attending, it really helps in planning and to ensure each event is adequately covered.

Please bring a clean blanket, pillow or bed for your animal to sit on.  This helps the animal feel like they have some set boundaries, gives the public an impression of an organized event and helps minimize hair left on the floor.

Spread yourselves out with at least 2 leash lengths between each animal station.

The librarians will pull some books for our visit. Choose a couple to have at your station.

If kids are hesitant to read, suggest that they share the job with other kids and pass the book around so each child can read a few pages.

If they are really young  or not yet reading ask them to tell you what is happening on the page using the pictures.

Some teams bring a photo album or scrapbook about their pet and encourage the children to read about the pet partner animal, or, suggest that after the child reads to your pet, your pet will share their personal book with the child.

As a little incentive, we have lots of ribbons from dog shows that you can hand kids after they read.  The LAPP coordinators for each library will hand those out so your have them in your therapy bags.

Remember you are not done until the animals are outside again.  Sometimes visitor don’t realize the session is over and stop in.
