Crossroads Safehouse is a shelter for women and children who are
experiencing domestic violence. They can live here for 6 weeks. Thursday evenings the children's counselor runs groups for the children who are in the safehouse at that time, while the Moms have a counseling group. We are part of the Thursday group the fourth Thursday of each month. We have a meet and greet with the animals at 5:45 and work with the group from 6 to 7 pm. The third Monday of each month we are part of the Crossroads Outreach group which is also at the safehouse and includes children at the safehouse as well as children from the community who come in with their moms to participate in a support group meeting. The time of this outreach group is also 5:45 for the animal meet and greet and 6 to 7 pm for the group. We have considered this setting to be Complex in the past, but have determined that if the Human is comfortable with kids it would work for some predictable teams. If you and your critter qualified as predictable, we want you to visit this site once without your animal to see if you are comfortable with it, and then we will set up a Veteran team to come and mentor you and your critter the first time you go together.

Larimer Center for Mental Health Loveland and Ft. Collins Centers
They are looking for more teams to do one-on-one visits with counselors and individual children. You need to get a background check for this venue. If you are interested in this let Amy know and she will get you started in the right direction. This would probably work for predictable dogs as it is just one-on-one.

Oakbrook II
These visits are the 3rd Thursday of the month from 6:00 - 7:00pm.
Oakbrook II is a residential facility for well elders who are healthy and independent.  These are people who are able to care for themselves, communicative, and really appreciate visiting with our animals. A staff member will be in attendance.  They would love visits from all species of our Delta Registered animals.
The address is 3300 Stanford Rd in Fort Collins, directly across Stanford from the Macys at the Foothills Fashion Mall.

Medical Center of the Rockies Loveland
We now have at least one Pet Partner team scheduled for each day of the week and on weekends, but need more teams to be able to visit in the ER, Radiology Department and on the Cardiac, Neurology, Medical and Trauma units at the hospital. Most teams visit for 60-90 minutes.
If you and your Pet Partner Dog (sorry- no other species at this time) are interested in being part of this adventure here is what you need to do:

1. Contact Linda Fisher to get your volunteer packet to get the process started.
Linda Fisher
lnf@pvhs.org or call (970) 624-1852

2. You have to go through the facility background check.

3. You have to do a series of two TB tests. These are free through PVH Health Care.

4. Linda wants to have one-on-one interviews with the humans only and will schedule this with you once you have done steps 1 through 3.

5. A volunteer orientation training specific to the MCR with Linda.

6. A time for Linda to meet your Pet Partner.

7. Get an ID tag for you and your dog which will be made at the facility and get your MCR volunteer shirt (LAPP can reimburse you for this expense).

8. Provide Linda with documents showing your Delta Pet Partner registration as well as a health/shot record for your dog from your Vet. Humans need to have their TB tests updated yearly and dogs need to have updated health record turned in to Linda at the same time.

9. Linda will set you up to shadow one of the Veteran Pet Partner Teams making visits.

10. Get on the visitation schedule. You can "Job share" a day with other teams (for example - You commit to the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month and someone else takes the 1st, 3rd and 5th Wednesdays). Or, you can come weekly and commit to set venues when you come (i.e. Thursdays on 4th floor and Radiology while another team covers Thursdays 3rd floor and ER).

11. Start your visits bringing smiles to patients, families and staff.

Pet Partners is one service program of the Delta Society. This volunteer activity provides training and support to individuals and screening for their pets so that registered human-animal teams may share the physical and emotional benefits of human-animal interactions with people in a variety of settings.

Get Involved!

LAPP would love to have you become involved! This is a growing organization where you will find your experience valued and your talents put to good use.

LAPP welcomes your involvement with or without your own animal. All that is asked of you is a commitment of time and an interest in promoting the human-animal bond. Some projects and programs do require that you and your companion animal have completed coursework, evaluation and registration in the Delta Society’s Pet Partners program. Workshops are offered several times each year.
